A Closeted Goth Girl Trying to Make it in the Professional World

Tuesday, March 25, 2014

Hello, here are some nail polishes that I have been trying out. I will now say my usual disclaimer about nail posts: this is not a nail blog/my nails suck/some pictures have chipped nail polish or visible cuticles/sorry for that/blah blah. These pictures are just to show the different colours and make comments about the formula of certain brands.

Sally Hansen Salon Effects Real Nail Polish Strips

I have always been a fan of these. They are great for wearing on special occasions and superb if you have no fine motor skills and are thus unable to do nail art freehand (like me!) The fact that they are made out of real nail polish is CRUCIAL; they are stretchy and have some "give" to them, thus it is easy to make them fit the shape of your nail and to file the edges off smoothly. I tried a similar product by Maybelline Colour Show (because they were cheaper) and they were terrible! However, they are nail STICKERS and not made of real nail polish. Therefore, they crinkle and do not stick well and it is VERY difficult to get them to match the shape of your nail. I had to remove the set that I tried as they looked terrible. However, I am bad at nail-related things, if you are good at it you could probably make them work.

Full Plume
Stud-io Time
Spun For You
Sally Hansen Fuzzy Coat

These come in a variety of colours and are supposed to make the nail look "fuzzy". They do not have a texture to them, they just have matte "glitter" particles in them.

Essie Camera and Sally Hansen Peach Fuzz
Hard Candy Black Tie Optional

LOVE this nail polish! You can do so many neat things with it! It looks awesome over any colour.

Black Tie Optional over China Glaze Celtic Sun
Black Tie Optional and L'Oreal New Money

Black Tie Optional over Bourjois So Laque! Bleu Violet and Maybelline Colour Show in Fuschia Fever.

Maybelline Colour Show Nail Lacquer

These nail polishes kind of suck. They are inexpensive and come in some awesome colours, but the formula is terrible. They are very thin and need many coats to become opaque and they chip very easily. The exception to this are some of the glitter topcoats that they make, they are not bad.

Maybellin Colour Show Lacquer in Green with Envy,  Nicole By OPI Black Texture, and China Glaze Crinkled Chrome.

Sally Hansen Magnetic Nail Colour

These work just as well as the more expensive brands, in my opinion.

Red-y Response
Nails, Inc. Neons and Nudes

I bought this set on sale at Sephora. I never buy any of those cute little Nails, Inc. kits unless they are on sale as they are rather pricey otherwise. Also, they have nice nail polish but it isn't THAT great so as to justify the price, in my opinion.

Porchester Square and Westbourne Grove
Revlon Nail Art Moon Candy

These double sided polish sets looked intriguing to me. I love the colour of the grey polish but the formula is just meh. The topcoat actually has a neat broken glass kind of effect. You have to apply more than one coat for it to look even however. You also have to kind of "place" the glitter particles with your brush to get an even look.

Quite some time ago, I was watching water marbling nail art tutorials on YouTube and decided to try it for myself. It is harder than it looks! I cannot make a specific design in the nail polish in the water like the people in the videos (thus I only made random designs). Also, when I tried using more than two colours it did not work. Thirdly, many types of nail polish do not work for this sort of thing (they don't float on the water properly) so there is a lot of trial and error involved.

OPI Alpine Snow and Black Onyx

OPI All the Berry Best! and Black Onyx

Sally Hansen Insta-Dry Lightening and OPI Black Onyx.

I shall be doing more nail posts soon as I have a few new things to try out!

What have you been doing with your nails lately? Ever tried water marbling? Let me know if you have any tips!

Colour of the Year: Radiant Orchid

Ummmm....is it just me or who in the f**k is this entity called "Pantone"? Why do they get to tell us which colour is trendy? I don't really get it. However, I am not above pretending that I am VERY on trend. This makeup look and clubbing outfit is PERHAPS from April 2013 (as we all know that I never get around to posting anything that I take pictures of) but let us pretend, if only for a moment, that I am very "with it" and "hip" and that I just did this recently in the spirit of bowing down to the colour and trend gods. If orchid tones are trendy, then I am fine with it as they are flattering on me and complement my eye colour. BUT WHAT IS ONE TO DO IF THIS COLOUR DOES NOT LOOK GOOD ON THEM??? THE HORROR.

FACE: MAC Prep and Prime, MAC Studio Fix Fluid Foundation in NC15, MAC Select Sheer Pressed Powder in NC15.

BROWS: MAC Eyebrow Pencil in Stud.

False Lashes: Sephora Mink.

Do ignore my awkward hair length; I have been growing out my old short haircut for quite some time now. I either like my hair freshly cut in a short style or really long so the in-between period rather sucks. It is a fair bit longer now. Also, I had some of those fusion i-tip extensions in. They look pretty cool and last for quite awhile.

What do you think of this "colour of the year" business? Can someone explain this "Pantone" thing to me?

MAC Punk Couture

Hello! At the start of this year, I decided I have too much makeup. I was going to stop buying makeup starting January 1st but I slipped big time when I saw the MAC Punk Couture collection. Dark lipsticks and neon pigments......I couldn't resist! (in my defense, I already had Neo Orange). Anyway, here are some swatches and my thoughts on the collection!

From left to right: Cremesheen Glasses: Jet Boy, No Apologies, Dark Outsider. Pigments: Neo Orange, True Chartreuse. Lipsticks: Instigator, Hautecore, Studded Kiss.

Above: Indoor light. Below: Natural Light.

From left to right: Neo Orange, True Chartreuse, Instigator, Studded Kiss, Hautecore, Jet Boy, Dark Outsider, No Apologies.

The lipsticks are of the Matte formulation. They are smooth and velvet-y with minimal shine. I was unable to get my hands on Punk Couture lipstick as it sold out quite quickly; also, I am told it is VERY similar to Potent Fig (a Mattene) which I already have. By looking at pictures on various blogs, I would say that Potent Fig is shinier and more blue-toned but VERY similar. I am a bit disappointed with the colour of Instigator as it looks very similar to other colours which I already have (NARS Train Bleu, MAC Smoked Purple, Night Violet, and Cyber). Studded Kiss is really nice, it is blood-red sort of shade. It looks rather brown-toned in indoor light but in natural light it is more wine/berry-ish. I will get a lot of use out of this one! Finally, there is Hautecore, which I got to add to my black lipstick collection. I like it a lot better than Black Knight (Cremesheen from Style Black) as a matte black is a lot more forgiving than a sheer, creamy formulation.

If you are like me and you freaked out with joy when Style Black came out back in 2009, you will notice the similarities to these three Cremesheen glasses with the Glimmerglasses from Style Black. In my opinion, they are the exact same colours in a slightly different formulation. Jet Boy is a greenish-gold colour with a creamy grey base, Dark Outsidser is just the creamy grey base, and No Apologies has pink/purple sparkles in the grey base. If you have the ones from Style Black, there would be no point in getting these. I have Blackfire from Style black and it looks almost the same as No Apologies; Blackfire has more sparkles and a darker base colour but they look quite similar on the lips (see photo below). At first, I was somewhat disappointed in these as I thought they would be more in your face. However, their wearability is somewhat of a blessing since I am stuck in "work makeup" most of the time. These give lips a nice grey tone with a bit of sparkle which is something a bit different for work but not so much that one cannot get away with it. They also look super fabulous over lipstick.

Jet Boy, Dark Outsider, and No Apologies.

I already had Neo-Orange but picked up True Chartreuse as I had been looking for a colour like this. These are smooth and packed with colour; however, they are rather hard to use. Their adherence is poor and I find I get a "balding" effect when I blend them. Blargh.

True Chartreuse, Neo Orange.

Did any of you try anything from this colletion? What do you think of MAC pigments? Does anyone else remember Style Black?

Nine Inch Nails!!

Back in November I went to go see Nine Inch Nails!! I didn't really have high hopes for it as Trent Reznor is now a unicorn-riding health-obsessed father of two who writes upbeat electronic tunes but it actually was an awesome show! I will admit I do find the newer albums to be catchy even though they are not as deep or ground breaking as the previous drug-induced albums were. They did some different things with their show including a REALLY neat light display (I've never seen anything like it at a concert before) and some neat female backing vocals on a few songs.
I wanted to do some neat makeup but I ended up ruining it! I was running a bit late and was trying to glue one some false lashes that had a thick band with black jewels and I screwed it up!! ARGH. One must be patient when applying horrible lashes with huge thick bands!! Anyway, I ended up getting lash glue all over my eyelid and then picked some crappy lashes with a thin band to stick on quickly. Didn't turn out the way I wanted it to, ha!

Liners: UD Rockstar, Kat Von D Piaf.
Mascara: Too Faced Better Than Sex.
False Lashes: Ugly Ardell Fright Night Bat Those Lashes Glow in the Dark Lashes.

Leather hair flower made by my friend, it is on the other side of my head in the outfit picture.
Boooo it looked so nice before I swear!

Headscarf: American Apparel.
Necklace: Express.
Sleeve: Le Chateau.
Dress: Plastik Wrap.
Boots: Demonia (I am definitely taking those silver panels OFF. They look like football padding or something!)
The boots don't really go with the dress but they're comfortable for standing for a long time at a concert.

Do you ever have issues with false lashes even though you 've been gluing them to your face for years? Ever seen NIN live?
