Looks That Never Left The House: Polka Dot Eyeliner

Sometimes when I'm bored on a day off, I like to pull out a bunch of makeup and try something a little different. It's fun to look through all my stuff and mess around a bit with the knowledge that the finalized look will never see the light of day (except on this blog, of course!) I wanted to use colours that reminded me of spring and try out some dotted eyeliner kind of like the promo pictures for Illamasqua's I'mperfection collection from last year.

Lime Crime Swatches and Thoughts

Lime Crime......it is a makeup brand that has become synonymous with controversy. I made my first purchase from Lime Crime right after they started their online sore in 2008. I bought two of their loose eyeshadows (which they do not carry anymore) and then BANG! There were massive waves of controversy about the brand flooding beauty blogs everywhere. I will not go into any of these issues in depth here as they have been extensively written about elsewhere. Essentially, the owner of the company made false claims and threatened people who posted negative reviews and "sockpuppet-ed" about in comment threads.

Unfortunately, when the owner was called out on these things, she did not apologize for her actions and by doing so, essentially shot herself in the foot. Since then, bloggers have been watching her like a hawk and pouncing on any mild misstep the company makes. Some of these issues have been blown way out of proportion, in my opinion; however, that is what happens when one shoots oneself in the foot. I feel that if she actually apologized for what happened int he beginning, she could have made a fresh start and saved her company's reputation.

Due to the poor behaviour of the owner, I am rather conflicted about purchasing from Lime Crime. On the one hand, I think their products are fantastic. I also love their promotional imagery* and packaging. I think that many negative reviews of their products have been somewhat overblown (once again, that's what happens when one shoots oneself in the foot) and affected by the company's negative reputation. I sometimes think that we all deserve a second chance. However, on the other hand, does a company really deserve a second chance if they never apologized for their behaviour in the first place?

I have bought several things from Lime Crime (and also received items as gifts). I feel guilty because I really think that the owner should have made some effort to apologize for past behaviour. I don't like to support companies that behave poorly. I also feel like the company has been unfairly bashed over minor issues due to past bad behaviour and that many products have been reviewed negatively due to bias (though once again, shooting oneself in the foot is one's own fault).

Now that I have said my piece on the company, I would like to share my thoughts on their offerings. I have always really liked most of their promotional material*. I think it is really nicely photographed, eye-catching, and well put together. Some examples:

Lip Noir Collection

Aquataenia Palette

I also think that their packaging is gorgeous and nicely detailed.

Aquataenia Palette

I adore the packaging of their liquid eyeliners! (I believe the packaging has since changed).

The eyeliner tubes are made of heavy materials, they are really nice.

Their liquid eyeliners are excellent products, in my opinion. They come in unique colours and have a great shiny finish. They also stay on essentially FOREVER.

From top to bottom: Citreuse, Blue Milk, 6th Element.  From left to right: Lunar Sea, Lazuli, Quill, and Orchidaceous.
I also enjoy the eyeshadows in the palette that I bought; they are well pigmented and very smooth. The colours are also awesome!

From left to right: Nautilus Prime, Coral of the Story, Seahorse Discourse, Pearl-ple. Atlanteal.
Whilst I have enjoyed all of the other products that I have from Lime Crime, the real pièce de résistance of the company would be their lipsticks. OH THE LIPSTICKS!!! I LOVE THEM. They come in weird colours, they are very pigmented, they apply smoothly, and they are long wearing. Also, they made a pink lipstick that actually looks good on me!!

From left to right: Glamour 101, Retrofuturist, Centrifuschia, My Beautiful Rocket, No She Didn't, and Chinchilla.
In summary, Lime Crime does a great job of making pretty promotional materials (most of the time)*, offers awesome products and has lovey packaging. I really wish that the owner would come out and clear up past issues; it would help to wash away the stains on this otherwise great brand. I think people really appreciate honesty and I think she would greatly improve her business.

What do you think about Lime Crime? Do you like their products? What do you think of their customer service? Would you buy from this company?

DISCLAIMER: ALL PRODUCTS PURCHASED BY ME OR BY FRIENDS AS GIFTS. I AM NOT AFFILIATED WITH THIS COMPANY IN ANY WAY, SHAPE OR FORM.

*I am aware that there has been some controversy over some of the promotional imagery involving cultural insensitivity/cultural appropriation. I do NOT agree with using culturally insensitive imagery to promote products.

Victory Rolls

As I have mentioned on this blog before, I have been trying to grow my hair out for quite some time. I was wanting to try some vintage hairstyles; however, I am very bad at doing hair. I bought a vintage hairstyling book and it was very helpful as I learned the best hair tip ever: SET YOUR HAIR FIRST. If I set my hair, I find that styling it is MUCH easier. (I have naturally VERY straight hair). For this particular style, I did a wet set using velcro rollers. I washed my hair in the afternoon, rolled it up, and finished drying it with a hair dryer in the evening before I styled my hair. You could also use sponge rollers but you would likely have to leave these in overnight to dry. When you brush out your hair, there should be wide, loose curls in it which gives your hair volume and bend so it will hold its shape when you style it.
I decided to try victory rolls because I have never been able to do them properly in the past. They turned out pretty decent but were a bit messy, I back-combed my hair a bit too much before I rolled it up. I also added red clip-in extensions to the rolls to make them more visible. I just let the rest of my hair alone after it was brushed out from the rollers.

WET SET

This is the first picture I have ever posted of myself on here without makeup, by the way! That's what I actually look like without 100 layers of makeup on.

Physician's Formula Sexy Booster Sexy Glow Bronzer and Benefit Rockateur

Hello! I am going through things that I have bought prior to the start of my NO BUY and posting swatches to remind myself that I have lots of makeup. Here are a couple of nice things for the cheeks!

Physician's Formula Sexy Booster Sexy Glow Bronzer

WOW, that is a long name for a product! Let's face it, I bought this because the packaging features fishnets and a high-heeled shoe and the powder looks like a little corset. It's one of those things that you leave out on your makeup table because it's pretty. The compact has a mirror on the back and comes with a little brush which actually works quite well.

This comes in two shades: bronzer and light bronzer. I picked the light bronzer. I use it as a neutral blush. If you don't like shimmery blushes or bronzer, you won't like this. It applies rather shiny. The powder has a fairly strong vanilla scent to it; if you are sensitive to scented products I would avoid this.

This product definitely makes some interesting claims. It is supposed to be like "lingerie for your face". (WTF?) Also, it is infused with cocoa extract, which is supposedly "the love chemical" and horny goatweed which is supposedly an "ancient aphrodisiac". Please tell me I am not the only one who finds it hilarious that there is an "ancient aphrodisiac" called HORNY goatweed. I did not experience any aphrodisiac effects while wearing this powder.

Ridiculous ingredients and overpowering scent aside, this is a very nicely packaged bronzer and I have quite enjoyed using it.

Benefit Rockateur Famously Provocative Cheek Powder

Once again, I may or may not have bought this because it looks pretty and has lace and little studs on the box. I do not care for most of Benefit's products but I do love the little boxes of powder. They come with a nice little brush and have a mirror inside.

This one has a cool imprint to the powder. I may or may not have used it prior to photographing it. (Fail!) Once again, this blush/bronzer is shimmery and it is quite heavily scented. Why do they add scent to face powders? Scent can be very irritating for some people (though neither of these powders bothered my skin).

Ummmm, so yeah, it appears that I didn't actually SWATCH either of these. That's really helpful! I have been using both a fair bit lately, you will see what they look like in upcoming looks.

What are your favourite neutral blushes or bronzers?

Worksafe Monday: Purple and Lavender for Spring

It is FINALLY starting to look more like spring outside! Purple is my favourite makeup colour for spring as I find that it looks nice with my eye colour. Lately I have been digging through my stash for some nice spring-y colours to make non-neutral worksafe looks. I found some lovely Silk Naturals shadows, a MAC eyeliner that I had forgotten about, and my old Dior palette.

Art Gallery Party

Usually, when I go out, I attend either a goth/industrial dance night, and alternative/indie dance night, or an 80's dance night. Recently, something new was brought to my attention: parties at the art gallery. The gallery in my city holds events where you go to the gallery, look at art, do art-related activities, drink, and dance. They have  DJ's that play various types of music and local musical artists. Apparently, they are trying to entice a younger crowd to appreciate art. These parties are themed; the one I went to was called "Cloud Nine" and you were supposed to incorporate pastels, clouds, the ethereal, and metallics into your outfit. When I heard the theme, I thought, "F**k." None of those words really pertain to anything in my mainstream or alternative wardrobes. However, I went into the abyss of my closet and found a galaxy-print dress my mother had got me for my birthday previously. It has lovely nebula clouds on it. To incorporate metallics, I wore shoes with a metallic tube on them, some flashy earrings that were a present from my friend, and false
lashes with little silver bits on them. For pastels, I shopped my stash and found an old sparkly pastel pink gloss and pastel pink blush. For eyeshadow I used the Sugarpill Cold Chemistry palette as these shades are metallic and ALMOST a bit pastel if one uses them lightly.

HOW DID MY HAIR GET SO LONG, you ask? I have a full set of human hair extensions. I actually think they look very natural. I was worried that they might look a bit sketchy, however I was quite pleasantly surprised by the effect. I can't wait until my own hair is this long!

I had a great time at the party, the gallery is a gorgeous venue. Looking at the art exhibits was a great novelty for me as I am not into art and that sort of thing so I quite enjoyed myself.

NO BUY......and a Comparison of MAC Dark Lipsticks

Recently I have decided that my makeup habit is becoming a bit.....ridiculous. I am completely in love with, obsessed with, and addicted to MAKEUP. I know I am not the only one; I am sure many of my fellow makeup and beauty bloggers feel the same way. However, I have decided that there is something to be said for appreciating and enjoying what I have, rather than always sniffing out the latest thing in cosmetics. I decided to go on a no-buy for 2014......and then I failed miserably and bought whole bunch of stuff in January. FAIL. I decided to start fresh at the beginning of February.

My goal is to make it ONE WHOLE YEAR without buying new makeup.

I will be allowed to replace ONLY the following items that I use daily: primer, foundation, powder, eye primer and base, and eyebrow pencil. I AM NOT ALLOWED to try new types of any of these things, just replace them with what I already had. I actually use up all of these things at least 5 times per year. I am also NOT ALLOWED to buy new mascara until I have used up all that I have; I have various travel size/sample size tubes in my stash as well as a few full-sized ones.

At this time, I have not bought ANY makeup for 2 months. It is sad, I am actually having a hard time with this! I have found that the best cure for makeup temptation is to shop one's stash. I have built up a lovely stash of makeup over the years and I am always pleasantly surprised to find something I haven't used in a long time whenever I root around in it. Something old can become new once more!

One of my biggest makeup temptations is DARK LIPSTICK. I am VERY ATTRACTED TO IT. I especially love MAC lipsticks. Here are some swatches to remind me that I DO NOT NEED another dark lipstick.
