Mixing Patterns

How is everyone doing on this Thursday evening? I am anxiously awaiting the end of my work day tomorrow as it is the last day before I get some time off!! WOO HOO!!! I could really use it at this point, work has been driving me nuts lately!

There are a few "fashion rules" that I tend to break on a regular basis. One of them is "Don't mix patterns." Today's outfit features 3 different black and white patterns: an abstract pattern on the tank top, a rippling water type pattern on the skirt, and an eyeball pattern on the scarf. Do they go together? Not particularly. However, I was feeling very black and white upon this day so I just said f**k it and put on ALL the black and white things! I was quite pleased that it was JUST BARELY cold enough out to wear a light scarf as a shawl.

Gothic Style for Hot Weather

Hello there, I hope you are all doing well on this Tuesday afternoon! I was off work today; I usually find my weekdays off to be painfully boring. For some reason, I had lots of energy and was quite productive today! First I got my running and exercises out of the way. Then I turned on some CD's (I kick it old school) and made salsa, vegetable broth and cut up some veggies so I will be ready to make chili this evening. I watered all of my trees and plants and did some pre-packing for my impending houseboating trip (you will hear more about that later!) I love it when I actually get some sh*t done on a Tuesday instead of procrastinating and screwing around!

Speaking of being unproductive, the summer heat has been making me feel rather lethargic lately. Oh, summer. I hope you shall be over soon. The hot weather makes it difficult for me to wear my blacks and not die of heat exhaustion. The most tolerable weather of the year (in my opinion, anyway) is always the most fleeting where I live. The mild and cool temperatures of spring and fall that allow me to layer and wear scarves, boots, and blazers in place of jackets are over far too soon......then we are left at the mercy of the blistering, blaring heat or the dry, static cling-inducting, sub zero temperatures. ANYWAY, enough whining from me about the weather! On to the outfit! It features my good old Lip Service seahorse maxi dress that has served me well the last few summers. I recently got a new crochet-type shrug which breathes enough to wear in the summer. It kind of goes with everything and crochet is "in" right now so this will be getting a lot of wear as we go into fall!

Worksafe Monday: WM Couture

Happy Monday! Today I will be sharing a worksafe outfit picture. I always enjoy seeing how other alternatively-inclined ladies dress for work (for example: Sophistique Noir, This is CorpGoth, and The Curious Professor Z). I admire how these ladies are able to project a professional appearance while using goth/alternative style elements. I haven't really shared a lot of my work wardrobe on this blog because my husband is not around to begrudgingly take my outfit photos for me when I leave for work. He has since given me a tripod so I can take my photos myself!
Today, my outfit is based around two of my favourite things: 1) flow-y black material and 2) leopard print. It also mostly consists of things that I got from a certain store that many people like to make fun of that bears the initials WM. One thing I like about women's work wear is that you can find pieces from both high-end and inexpensive stores like WM. You don't have to break the bank to find professional, comfortable clothing that you can wear on the job.

HUGE Earrings, Summer-y Makeup

In a few weeks, summer will be officially over and we get into my favourite season of the year - FALL!! I have probably complained about summer on here before......I always prefer fall makeup and clothing and I CANNOT STAND hot weather!! I often have nothing to wear in the summer due to my heat sensitivity. Most types of summer fashions just do NOT work on me. Strappy tops that you cannot wear bras with and super tiny shorts are just not flattering to my body type.

This year, the fashion gods have given me a break and a chance to expand my summer wardrobe. LONG SKIRTS, MIDI SKIRTS, and MAXI DRESSES were everywhere!! Also, I found a lot of BLACK THINGS!! AWWWW YEAHHHHH! *ahem* I LOVE clothing with MOVEMENT that flows when you walk! Also, flow-y things keep one well ventilated whilst providing the coverage that one with a curvier body type may prefer.

The outfit below was worn to go out for a pasta dinner with some friends. The dress is long but it has ventilation so it is great for summer. It is also a great basic piece; I have worn it many times this summer with different accessories and shoes.....it goes with LOTS of other things in my wardrobe! It is like wearing a different dress every time! The earrings that I wore with it are HUGE - I love me some statement jewelry! They also hang down on your shoulders so they kind of double as neck jewelry.  I tried to do some lighter makeup since it is summer; I took my inspiration from the iridescent beads on the earrings.

Terminus 2014 Day 3

Last summer's Terminus Festival did not end on a great note for me. Overall, the day was a bit of a disappointment for various reasons. Firstly, I had been feeling somewhat unwell the entire weekend which makes it rather difficult to wear uncomfortable clothing and shoes in a hot bar for 3 days in a row. Secondly, I am an idiot and did not try on my outfit for the evening before I wore it. I had ordered a really neat layered skirt from Artifice Clothing but unfortunately I misjudged the length of it from looking at the pictures. I felt rather uncomfortable in it as I don't feel that shorter length skirts are very flattering on me, especially when I was wearing something quite revealing on top. The proportions just did not work on me, I needed a shrug or a pencil skirt or something!! Thirdly, the band that I had been SO excited to see was unexpectedly one of the worst live shows I have ever seen!

I started out the evening by attending the performance of the opening band Cygnets who are local to where I live. As they always do, they put on a very classy and well-performed show. They sound rather like Joy Division. I had worn my "day clothing" to this show as it was quite early in the evening.

After going back to the hotel to lay down for awhile and dress myself up, I came back to see performances by Architect and Author and Punisher. I found Author and Punisher to be quite interesting; it is a one-man band that features home-made instruments. COOL.

Author and Punisher
The band that I had been REALLY excited to see was the festival's headlining band: COVENANT. They have been a favourite of mine for YEARS and I had never seen them live before and I didn't think I ever would.

Unfortunately, the show turned out to be one of the worst live performances I have ever seen. I was shocked by how bad it was. Covenant has been a big name in the scene since the 80's and the quality of their albums has always been exceptional so I was expecting to be wowed by them.
The only original member of the band that remains is the frontman, Eskil Simonsson. There are two other gentlemen who make up the live band these days, and I would just like to say that they were both very professional and did the best they could to make it a great show. The lead singer, on the other hand, was a complete mess. It appeared that he had become very drunk before the performance (I am not simply speculating here, the festival takes place in a relatively small venue and the band members are often out and about amongst the festival-goers so you can see what they are up to). He forgot many of the words to various songs, including one of their best known hits "Call the Ships to Port". He basically didn't get a single word of that one out at all. He kept standing on a crate to move the lighting apparatus around and yelling at the lighting and sound people. He didn't look like he was going to be able to stay on his feet until the end of the show, it was really something. Many members of the crowd had looks on their faces that said, "WTF, really!?" Another minor complaint was the weird choice of songs for their setlist (other people who are fans of the band agreed that their choice of songs to play live was very odd). I was quite surprised to see such a poor live show as I have always read that their live shows are amazing.

TO BE FAIR, I suppose we are all human and we are not always at our best. It could have just been a really bad day for him, he could have been ill, etc. but it did not seem that way to me.

Usually, I don't like to post negative things like this on a place where they can be read by the public. However, in this case, I feel that this behaviour was extremely disrespectful to the organizers of the festival, the other bands that played, and the fans who came out to support them. In Canada, we do not have as much of a goth/industrial music festival scene as places like Europe so it is a big deal for us to be able to attend festivals in our own country.  The people who have been organizing this festival do a LOT of work to bring us bands from many different countries. Since Covenant were the HEADLINERS for the festival, I feel that they should be an example to the other bands who were opening of how to put on a good show. As far as I know, if you are one of the headlining bands of a festival, you are getting paid more than the newer, opening bands who are there to get their names out.  If the bands who traveled all the way to our festival to play to smaller audiences in early time slots could put on professional, energetic shows, then I would expect the same from the HEADLINER of the WHOLE festival.  Also, many of the fans who came to the festival traveled from far away and took days off work and had to pay for hotels, etc. so it seems that the least a band could do is be professional and do their job.

On a more positive note, I am sorry that I was not able to attend Terminus this year because the organizers and the bands are always awesome and they had a great lineup this year! I hope to attend it again in the future!

What is the worst live concert that you have ever been to?

Terminus 2014 Day 2

Happy Monday! I just had to interrupt the typing of this post to break up a cat fight that was going on in my living room. I planted some catnip on my deck which attracts the neigbour's cat; my indoor cat James is less than impressed with this and the two of them were hissing and essentially trying to kill each other through the window.....good times!
Anyway, here is a post about day 2 of last year's Terminus Festival!

Kevorkian Death Cycle
I got to see a couple of bands that I hadn't seen live before such as Kevorkian Death Cycle and 3 Teeth.  I recall that I wasn't feeling all that well so it was a bit of a toned-down evening for me. I also recall that I was an idiot and did not break in my corset before wearing it. The damned thing had some flat steel boning in it and thereby it was rather uncomfortable. I am usually not bothered by corsets but my discomfort was exacerbated by the fact that I was under the weather.

Yeah, me too.
My favourite band of the night was Haujobb. I am always impressed by their live show. If you are looking for an excellent album to listen to that is good from the first song to the last, try listening to their New World March. It is brilliant, I tell you. BRILLIANT!!

I have the day off today so I am sitting here in my pyjamas which is driving me nuts. I AM IN THE MOOD TO DRESS UP but I have nowhere to go!!

How's your Monday going?

Terminus 2014 Day 1

Hello there, how is everyone's summer going? Mine has been going pretty well except for the fact that I haven't had much opportunity to go to any festivals, events, club nights, or concerts this year due to crappy work hours. My alternative wardrobe languishes unworn in my closet and I think the only makeup I can remember how to do involves the Naked2 palette.  It's not that I haven't been up to anything enjoyable, it's just that I COULD USE A NIGHT OUT IN A CORSET AND PURPLE LIPSTICK AND RIDICULOUS BOOTS OR SOMETHING UP IN HERE.

On that note, here are some pictures from a Canadian music festival called Terminus that occurs yearly in Calgary. These pictures are from when I attended last year. (PROCRASTINATE MUCH? Jeez.)

FACE: MAC Prep and Prime, MAC Studio Fix Fluid Foundation in NC15, MAC Select Sheer Pressed Powder in NC15.
BROWS: Maybelline Black Liquid Eyeliner.

False Lashes: Partygirl.

I decided to have some fun with my crappy looking nails. I used the Nails, Inc Bling it on Rebel kit. It is hard to see in this photo but the matte "leather effect" nail polish has a really neat texture.

My evening started out with a band I had never seen live before, Die Warzau. It was not the kind of music I normally listen to but I do enjoy seeing different types of bands when I go to festivals.

A standout for me that night was the performance by Psyche, who are originally from Edmonton (where I live) but have been based out of Germany for quite some time. I loved their 80's pop sound; they were excellent live.

Another band that I really enjoyed was Tactical Sekt. I had heard of them, but was not particularly familiar with them. They blew me away! They had excellent energy and kept the crowd dancing.

Tactical Sekt
The final performance was [:SITD:]. I had seen them before but they are always a treat to watch; you can't go wrong with some [:SITD:] in my opinion!

How has your summer been so far?
