The Side-Eye Jacket

One of my favourite items of clothing is the faux-leather cropped jacket. They are such a versatile wardrobe component; one can wear them as outerwear in mild weather or use them as a blazer-like piece to complete an outfit. They can take a summer outfit and turn it into a fall outfit. My black cropped jackets get a TON of wear.
I have always been attracted to COLOURED faux leather cropped jackets in particular but only have one of them as they are harder to match with outfits. The one I have is bright red and has a slight shoulder pad which does nothing but make me look top heavy as I am broad-shouldered, large chested, and fat-armed.  None of these facts stops me from wearing shoulder pads because I LOVE THEM!!!! DAMN YOU SHOULDER PADS!! YOU DO NOT FLATTER ME YET I MUST HAVE YOU!! Anyway, I love adding my red jacket to a basic black outfit; it becomes instantly eye-catching........though apparently not in a good way.
Now, if you have been reading this blog for quite some time, you know that I sometimes dress in an unconventional manner. I have piercings and tattoos and I am not afraid to wear weird makeup colours. I am no stranger to what I like to call the "side-eye." I rarely even notice if people are looking at me funny anymore because I am so used to it (and I find that the older you get, the less f*cks you give). My daywear at this point in my life consists of a lot of mainstream clothing and is drastically toned-down compared to what I used to wear when I was younger. Despite this, where I live if you are wearing anything beyond jeans and a t-shirt or yoga pants and UGGS people will give you the side-eye. For all of the times that I have worn navy-blue lipstick in public I never get as much side-eye as when I wear this particular jacket. It is just WEIRD. It is hardly the most side-eye-inducing item of clothing that I own and yet I always get these looks like, "WTF IS WITH THIS GIRL IN THE BRIGHT RED JACKET?? I AM AFRAID!! BACK AWAY!" Maybe it just looks really bad on me and I just don't know it? I am not sure but it just seems odd.

Sally Hansen Salon Gel Polish in Red My Lips, Kat Von D Underage Red lipstick.
I wore this out for a dinner with friends. I decided to match my lips and nails to my coat. I finally got to wear the cool necklace that my husband got for me a long time ago.....I just couldn't find the right thing to wear it with for the longest time!

  1. I think you get the looks because you look so amazing in it!
It's like in your face in the best way possible-- it's loud and kick ass.

I recently tried wearing a crop top, despite having a less than flat belly lol-- something I said I'd never try.I was definitely self conscious about it, but I didn't hate the experience of stepping out of my norm. It actually felt really good!

  2. I'll be honest--I always stare at people wearing red jackets. I can't help it. Red is a loud color and they always stand out from a crowd. I particularly love red leather biker jackets and wool trench coats. I've got a red cotton twill biker jacket, and that jackets always ruins lives every time I wear it lol. I get married guys hitting on me, people randomly starting fights with me--I don't know what it is about a flashy red jacket. It's like the red flag for a bull.

  5. I love it! Maybe the bright colour atttracted the views? Many "normal" people are afraid of bright colours... And you look great with them!

  6. I think it might be the color attracting stares. In a world of blue jeans and beige, red is very eye-catching. Maybe even intimidating to some people? But it looks great, and the necklace is fantastic!

I garner the most stares when I wear a hat. Not a weird hat, just a normal hat like a grey beret or black cloche.

  8. OMG, you are killing it! F* all those side-eye people, lol! I think people with no fashion sense just get confused when they are confronted with colors and REAL STYLE. I love everything about this, especially the jacket and leggings!

  9. People be side eyeing you as they are trying to take you all in, because you look WONDERFUL! The jacket=aces!

I got a 'stopped mid-conversation and stared, then scoffed' while I was in Target last week. In Buffalo, people dress the same way you described your area, so my husband and I create a stir when we're out in public. "Why are you guys so dressed up?" Ummmm, we always look like this. LOL!!!!
